Consideration

The Staff Development Unit (SDU), a central service area within Human Resources Division is the principal resource centre for General staff development.

SDU facilitates and provides a range of formal and informal in-house and external staff development opportunities that equip members of General staff to fulfil their personal potential and the overall objectives of the university.

General staff development is concerned with providing opportunities for staff to acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills that will support their work and enhance their career options.  Participation in activities of relevant professional associations is a valuable form of General staff development.

General staff development also aims to assist staff improve the efficiency and effectiveness with which the university is able to fulfil its goals and objectives.

Each member of the General staff may expect her/his immediate supervisor to provide guidance for improving job performance through the acquisition of skills, thereby enhancing prospects of career advancement.

Programs and services provided by the Staff Development Unit for managers and staff include:  

  • Performance management: information, advice, support and supervisor training programs for the university's performance management schemes for both academic and General staff
  • Formal development and training programs addressing staff selection, induction, work skills and career development, and leadership and management
  • Internal consulting and referral service to managers and staff of work units to assist in identifying and planning solutions for specific development and training needs.
  • IT training in desktop applications including web publishing through an annual scheduled IT training program and an IT consultancy service customising training to local work group needs.
  • General staff awards and fellowships administered by SDU provide excellent professional development opportunities.  The Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Exceptional Service by General staff, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President (Resources) Career Development Scholarships, and the Caroline Chisholm and RL Martin General staff Travelling Fellowships, are applied for annually.
  • Coordination of Monash staff attendance at a range of AV-CC Leadership Programs
  • To support the self-directed learning of staff, SDU maintains a small resource library with course information, books, training tapes and videos that may be used by members of staff.
