Special Leave - Paid and Unpaid

Eligibility and Period of Leave

Refer to paragraph (w), Schedule 5 of the Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Academic and General Staff) 2005 or, where applicable, the provisions of the relevant AWA Terms and Benefits Policy.

Policy - Special Paid Leave

Academic staff members applying for special paid leave are required to submit their applications to their Dean or the Dean's nominated delegate. The applications of general staff members are required to be submitted to their Dean or Divisional Director (as appropriate) or to the nominated delegate of the Dean or Divisional Director.

Policy - Special Unpaid Leave

During a period of special unpaid leave, the staff member has no access to University holidays.

Salary increment dates will be deferred for periods of leave without pay, such periods of leave are not to count as service (refer to Clause 34.4 - Definitions and General Conditions of the Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Academic and General Staff) 2005 or, where applicable, the provisions of the relevant AWA Terms and Benefits Policy).  The new incremental date will then become the staff member's incremental date for future incremental advancement.

Approval of any application for special unpaid leave is subject to the exhaustion of any existing annual leave and long service leave credits.

Academic staff members applying for special unpaid leave for a period of six months or less are required to submit their applications to their Dean or the Dean's nominated delegate. The applications of general staff members for a period of six months or less are required to submit their applications to their Dean or Divisional Director (as appropriate) or to the nominated delegate of the Dean or Divisional Director.

All applications for special unpaid leave over six months are required to be submitted with the endorsement of the Dean or Divisional Director (as appropriate) to the responsible Deputy Vice-Chancellor for academic staff or the Vice-President (Administration) for general staff.
