Carer's Leave

Eligibility and Entitlements

Refer to paragraph (c), Schedule 5 and clause 34.1(d) of the Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Academic and General Staff) 2005 or, where applicable, the provisions of the relevant AWA Terms and Benefits Policy.

Policy

Application

Carer’s leave applies to staff members (other than a casual or sessional staff member) with responsibilities for the care of a family member who is subject to illness.

For the purposes of carer's leave, a child includes a dependant or adult child (including an adopted, step or ex-nuptial child).

Periods of Leave

In addition to any prescribed paid leave entitlements, a staff member eligible for carer's leave may, by arrangement with the University, access:

  • make-up time, whereby the staff member performs additional work at ordinary time to make up for time lost; or
  • unpaid leave.

Paid leave entitlements are not cumulative from year to year.

Evidence of Illness

All absences relating to carer’s leave must be supported by the production of relevant documentary evidence satisfactory to the University of the illness of the staff member's family member, such as a medical certificate or statutory declaration.
