Appointment procedure - Honorary Junior Research Associate

Eligibility

To be eligible for the position of Honorary Junior Research Associate a graduate research student must be awaiting the outcome of the examination of their thesis and deemed by the relevant head of department to be making an ongoing and significant contribution to the University.

Roles and responsibilities

The person is appointed in recognition of the continuing research contributions to the University made by the graduate student awaiting the outcome of the examination of their thesis. The person is required to maintain an ongoing contribution to research within the administrative unit.

Appointment procedures

The head of administrative unit submits a recommendation to the dean detailing reasons for the appointment and specific conditions for access to facilities.

The dean approves the appointment and advises the faculty board.

The dean makes a formal offer of honorary appointment.

Length of appointment

The length of appointment will normally be six months with provision for reappointment.

Rights

The rights of the individual who holds the title include use of the honorary title.

Honorary Junior Research Associates may use their honorary title when carrying out activities which form part of their contribution to Monash University.

Honorary Junior Research Associates may also use their honorary title when carrying out activities which are outside their contribution to Monash, but only when it can reasonably be construed that there is an association between the University and the individual and:

  • there is no conflict of interest between the individual’s work and their contribution to the University as an Honorary Junior Research Associate; and
  • appropriate insurance and indemnification arrangements are in place.

It is the Honorary Junior Research Associate’s responsibility to ensure that these requirements are satisfied.

The Dean retains the right to remove the title in certain circumstances, such as where the person has committed a serious criminal offence, where there is a conflict of interest or where damage may be caused to the reputation of the university by having a continued association with the person.

Payment

The Honorary Junior Research Associate shall not be entitled to any stipend arising from his or her duties.
