First Aid co-ordinators, First aiders in medium to high risk departments (e.g. laboratory/workshop departments such as Art & Design, Facilities & Services and catering) as well as selected staff from low risk areas as determind in consultation with the OHS Consultant to your area.

Overview

This two day course describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life threatening emergencies using basic life support measures only. Upon successful completion of this course, participants names will be added to SAP, which will only be accessible to authorised Monash University staff members

The focus of this program is to enable participants to obtain the skills and knowledge to carry out emergency first aid procedures, basic life support, management of the casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical assistance.

Intended Outcomes

After completion of this course, participants should be able to carry out emergency first aid procedures in the first few minutes of a life-threatening incident and carry out level 2 emergency first aid procedures.

Course Content

  • cardiopulmonary resuscitation (including the use of a defibrillator)
  • initial first aid management of the collapsed or unconscious patient
  • bleeding and management of common injuries and minor disorders such as cuts, fractures
  • burns, bruises and sprains and the First Aid Compliance Code

Includes First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis.

Please note that all first aiders are required to renew their First Aid certificate every three years and participate in a CPR Refresher every 12 months.

Learning Approach

This program is focused on active participation. It involves progressive practical assessment  and a multiple choice assessment.

Trainers (external provider) are paramedics, nurses or equivalent

Hepatitis B

In order to minimise risk, staff who undertake a first aid course and act as Monash University first aiders are expected to undergo a Hepatitis B Immunisation course, paid for by their department. Defibrillation training

Training in using a defib is covered in Level 2 first aid and in CPR refresher courses.

Handouts and materials

All participants will receive course notes and a certificate.

During courses, participants will have the use of class sets of bandages, resource manuals, and manikins on a ratio of a maximum of 1 manikin per 3 participants.
