Overview

This half day interactive workshop introduces university staff to names from 10 Asian language groups (Mandarin, other Chinese dialects, Vietnamese, Thai, Tamil, Singhalese, Indonesian/Malay, Hindi, Japanese). It provides an overview of the structure and pronunciation of names from these groups, and gives participants practical advice about how to address people, entering names into databases, identifying the origin of a given name and managing common difficulties with names.

Course Content

Participants will

  • Explore the structure, cultural aspects and pronunciation of names from 10 Asian language groups
  • Gain knowledge of how Australian naming customs differ from those in key Asian countries
  • Learn practical strategies for managing difficulties
