Caring for Older People

Welcome to the online Monash University Carer’s Kit – a resource to assist and support you in balancing your work and life responsibilities when you are caring for an older relative

The combination of an aging workforce and an aging population means that there are increasing numbers of people balancing work commitments and caring responsibilities for older people, most commonly their parents or parents-in-law. Managing these responsibilities can be a difficult and overwhelming task. The information contained in this kit is intended to provide you with a variety of information while you are providing care for an older person. Information such as how Monash’s policies can assist you manage your responsibilities, how to go about accessing services in your local area or that of the person you are caring for, how to locate legal and financial resources, and links to support services that might be useful for you and/or the person you are caring for has been included. This resource is one of a range of Work Life and Family initiatives and tools Monash University provides to enhance your work and family experience.

Please note that this kit includes a range of information but may not have everything that you need. Also Monash does not formally endorse the organisations or services provided in this kit.

Family friendly workplace/Monash support for carers

Monash is committed to being an employer of choice for all staff. There are a number of policies and provisions aimed to support staff and students who are carers. The following links are for information and services provided by Monash.

The Work Life Unit assists staff and supervisors with information on Monash’s policies on flexible working hours, home-based work, time in lieu and so on that may be relevant to carers planning how they will balance their responsibilities. Negotiable flexibilities in employment arrangements

The Monash University Enterprise Bargaining Agreements provide details on leave entitlements and other relevant information.

The Monash University Counselling Service provides professional and confidential psychological counselling services to all Monash students and staff.

The Employee assistance program is provided by an independent company providing free counselling to Monash University employees and their families.

The Work, study and family responsibilities policy provides the framework for the Monash Work Life strategy.

Care and service provision for older people

Supports and services for older people are available from a range of government and non-government organisations. They include government and authorities, service providers in the non-government sector (including for-profit and not-for-profit organisations), local governments, community groups, and a range of other community-based organisations.

The Local Government website has a search tool with links to all the local governments in Victoria. Local councils often provide basic supports through aged and disability services, such as:

  • Nursing care
  • Home delivered meals
  • Domestic assistance (e.g. cleaning, gardening, home modification and maintenance)
  • Personal care (e.g. showering)
  • Transport
  • Respite care
  • Counselling
  • Needs assessment

The Victorian Government Aged Care website details the services provided by the aged care sector and how individuals can access assistance. Provides information on how older people can be assessed in regards to their housing needs and care requirements through the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS) and/or be provided with home based care through the Home and Community Care Program (HACC). The site also provides information and links on health issues affecting older people.

Aged and Community Services Australia Inc represents over 1,200 church and charitable and community based organisations providing accommodation and care services to older people, people with a disability and their carers.

The Federal Government Department of Health and Ageing provides Information on home based care, residential care, and information for carers.

Information about other support available

Centrelink

The National Welfare Rights Network is a network of community legal services that provides legal advice to individuals in relation to their interactions with welfare agencies such as Centrelink.

Victorian State Concessions are designed to improve the affordability of key services to pension card holders and low income households. Areas covered by State Concessions include energy, water and sewerage, municipal rates and transport.

Information and support for carers

Carers Victoria is a statewide organisation representing the needs of carers, offering direct services to support carers in their caring role, as well as education, training and advocacy programs to increase awareness of carers and their issues.

The Wellness Guide for Carers is a directory developed by Deakin University’s School of Nursing. It contains information and hints on:

  • how to live and stay well
  • where to find information on health-related topics
  • how to seek help from available community services.

National Respite for Carers Program includes information on centres that provide respite care, home based and emergency respite care.

Accessibility and Transport

Information on the accessibility of public transport in Victoria is provided by the Department of Infrastructure Public Transport Division

Application forms for and information on the Seniors Card, which entitles cardholders to concession rates on public transport and various other discounts.

The Companion Card program promotes the right of people with a disability, who require a companion, to fair ticketing at Victorian events and venues by reducing the fares and admission prices for their companion.

The Multi Purpose Taxi Program helps Victorians with severe and permanent disabilities use taxis at an affordable rate.

VicRoads provides

Check out accessibility.com.au for information on accessible venues, entertainment, sports, recreation, equipment, organisations, services, travel and tourism.

Legal

The Office of the Public Advocate provides information on powers of attorney and guardianship.

Health information and community support

The Better Health Channel is an online health information and health practitioners guide.

The Office of Senior Victorians is a source for information on services available to older people, events and social support.

agedcarecrisis.com is an independent website set up for the primary purpose of representing elderly citizens with regards to aged care issues. The website contains information on a range of topics with a strong focus on the issue of elder abuse. 

The VicHealth website has Links to information and support services for specific health issues such as the Alzheimer’s Association of Victoria and Diabetes Australia. 

The Local Government Victoria website provides a search tool to find your local council in order to find out about Senior Citizens Clubs in local areas.

Information and services for older people and their carers from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds

The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council Australia (FECCA) website lists contact details for all the Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs). Local MRCs provide services such as social support and senior citizens clubs, information on culturally appropriate service provision and housing, and food services (for example, providing home delivered Halal food).

The Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria is an umbrella organisation providing information on health and other social service provision and publishes a newsletter aimed at older people from CALD backgrounds.

Information and services for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) older people and their carers

The ALSO Foundation has an Older Persons Project.

Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria includes articles and information on the issues facing ageing GLBTI people.

The Gay and Lesbian Switchboard provides telephone counselling, information and referral.

Information and services for older Indigenous people and their carers

Aboriginal Community Elders Service (ACES) provides adult day care, hostel care, a medical clinic and an Elders Cultural Centre:

The Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) represents the collective of all Aboriginal community-controlled health organisations around Victoria – contact details for these organisations are listed on the website.

The state government website, Victorian Koori Health contains downloads of Department of Human Services (DHS) data and policy documents and links to DHS web pages and other related websites.
