Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace - Women's Leadership and Advancement Scheme

Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act

Under the Federal Government’s Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Act (1999), Australian organisations with 100 or more employees are required to establish a workplace program to remove the barriers to women entering and advancing in their organisation. Under this legislation, organisations must:

  • prepare a workplace profile (detailing the placement of female staff throughout the organisation);
  • identify equal employment opportunity issues for women;
  • develop strategies to address those issues; and
  • measure and report on outcomes.

The Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency has the role of administering the Act and through education, assists organisations to achieve equal opportunity for women.

Inclusive Practices: Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Plan 2005-2010

Monash University has had an active commitment to equal opportunity for women in the workplace since 1986 and has implemented a range of initiatives, strategies and programs to recruit, retain, promote and advance talented female staff.

The Inclusive Practices: Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Plan 2005-2010 has been developed to enhance equity at Monash University and its status as a preferred employer and educator. It reflects an ongoing commitment by the University to the principles and practice of gender equity in employment.

Employer of Choice for Women

Monash is among a small group of organisations that have received the Employer of Choice for Women citation since it was introduced in 2001 by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency.  To maintain this citation, organisations must re-apply each year demonstrating improved outcomes for women and inclusive people management frameworks.
