Registration with the DLU

The following information has been developed to advise Monash University staff of the DLU processes and academic accommodations.

1.  Registration Process
2.  Eligibility Letters
3.  Notetakers in Lectures
4.  Requests for Extensions
5.  AAA’s & Class Test Forms

Registration Process

Registration with the DLU involves meeting with a Disability Liaison Officer to discuss a student’s disability/medical condition and its impact on the student’s access to information and academic experience.  During this time the Disability Liaison Officer will obtain appropriate medical documentation completed by a qualified professional who has comprehensive training and experience in the relevant field of health/disability.  Thorough discussion and negotiations will determine reasonable accommodations that are appropriate to that student and their individual circumstances and then academic accommodations are put in place.

Eligibility Letters

Once students are registered with the DLU, an Eligibility Letter may be written by a Disability Liaison Officer, with recommendations on appropriate academic accommodations required by students.  Information contained in the Eligibility Letter is based on and supported by relevant and current medical documentation and ongoing liaison with the student.  The information contained in an Eligibility Letter is confidential and may be legally privileged.  Any use, dissemination, distribution or reproduction of this information is prohibited.

Notetakers in Lectures

The note taking service is available to students registered with the Disability Liaison Unit (DLU).  It aims to provide students with an accurate summary or representation (rather than a complete record) of information/material delivered in lectures, tutorials or practical/laboratory classes.

The notetaking service is not designed to substitute for the participation of students in lectures/tutorials.  The notetaking service is available to students who are unable to access notes in any preferable method due to the nature/impact of their disability/condition on their studies.  The notetaking service does not include explanation, coaching or tutoring assistance.

Eligibility for the notetaking service is determined by a Disability Liaison Officer once a student has obtained appropriate documentation and it is deemed the most appropriate option among available resources.

Requests for Extensions

Students who are registered with the DLU may at times require extensions on unit requirements, in order to better mange the impact of their disability/medical condition on their studies.  Students are advised by the DLU to contact relevant Faculty staff, directly in person and/or via email, to make their request.

Where a student’s disability/medical condition is having an ongoing impact on their health, staff may receive reasonable requests for accommodation in the form of an extension, directly from the DLU.  These requests are based on and supported by relevant and current medical documentation and ongoing liaison with the student.

Individual Disability Liaison Officers can be contacted for additional information regarding requests for extensions.  Written authorisation is obtained from students prior to disclosing any information that is private and confidential.

AAA’s & Class Test Forms

Alternative Arrangements for Assessment (AAA’s) can be arranged for students in departmental/class tests.  Disability Liaison Officers may send a AAA Form to lecturers with recommendations on specific accommodations that a student will require in a departmental test.  These recommendations are supported by relevant and current medical documentation that specifically identifies the student’s requirements in an examination situation.  Students are also eligible to receive these accommodations in end of semester examinations that may be run in our alternative examination venue at the Engineering Halls, Clayton Campus.  For further information regarding the AAA process please contact the DLU.
