Position Classifications

General staff positions at Monash are classified according to the Higher Education Worker (HEW) classification descriptors for general staff.

Positions are classified taking into account the functions and responsibilities required to be undertaken. The position description must reflect the duties and responsibilities of the position not the performance or ability of the incumbent occupying the position. For more information on general staff performance management, please refer to Performance Management @ Monash.

In cases where the duties and responsibilities of the position change significantly, a new position description should be prepared and agreed to prior to evaluation.

Evaluation Process

Once a position description has been updated and reflects the current duties and responsibilities of the role, the contents of the updated position description must be signed by the incumbent, agreed by the position supervisor and endorsed by the head of the department. Positions expected to be evaluated between HEW Level 1-7 should then be forwarded to the Faculty/Divisional Classification Committee for evaluation. All general staff positions are evaluated in accordance with the General Staff Classification Descriptors.

Position descriptions to be evaluated at HEW Level 8 and above should be forwarded to Human Resources for evaluation.

Review Process

General staff members aggrieved by classification decisions made in relation to their positions have the right to apply for a review under Clause 67 of the Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Academic and General Staff) 2005 or the Disputed Classifications provision of the relevant AWA Terms and Benefits Policy.

Training Courses

A Position description writing training course is available to all staff of the university. Training is also available to staff who are involved in position description evaluation. For more information, please contact the Staff Development Unit.
