General Requirements of Safety in Workshops

The following rules apply to all staff, whether they are frequent or occasional users of machinery and equipment:

1. Qualified or suitably trained personnel only to use equipment
2. Wear suitable attire for operating machinery or equipment
3. Keep equipment and the surrounding area clean and tidy at all times;
4. Always seek instruction before using an unfamiliar piece of equipment;
5. Only use tools and machines for their intended purpose;
6. Report any damaged equipment and do not use it until it has been repaired by a qualified person;
7. Where machine guards are provided they must be kept in place;
8. Never distract the attention of another staff member when operating equipment and never indulge in horseplay;
9. Always use the appropriate personal protective equipment;
10. Long hair must be restrained;
11. Never use compressed air for cleaning clothing and machinery;
12. Report ALL hazards, unsafe conditions and work practices.
