Contractors

Monash University is committed to providing contractors with a healthy and safe environment.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 states that independent contractors and their employees are to be regarded as employees of the organisation engaging the independent contractor in terms of responsibility for occupational health and safety. Monash University and those Monash staff who engage or manage contractors are therefore responsible for the health and safety of the contractor and the contractor's employees, in relation to all matters over which Monash University has control. Contractors engaged by Monash University also have responsibility for safeguarding the health and safety of themselves and Monash University staff, students and visitors.

The responsibilities of contractors include:

  • ensuring that they and their employees complete the campus-specific Monash University contractor induction program;
  • ensuring that a comprehensive job safety analysis is completed by the contractor and reviewed by Monash staff before work commences;
  • ensure that a system is in place to protect and/or minimise the environmental impact of the contractor's activities;
  • using equipment and materials that are safe and used in a manner that does not pose a risk to the themselves or to Monash University staff, students and visitors;
  • ensuring the use of safe work methods; and
  • to have statutory compensation and liability insurance

Visitors

Monash University is committed to providing visitors with a healthy and safe environment.

The responsibilities of visitors include:

  • complying with occupational health and safety instructions, policies and procedures;
  • complying with the instructions given by emergency response personnel such as emergency wardens and first aiders; and
  • not willfully or recklessly endangering the health and safety of any person.
