Deferment of an Offer

How and When to Apply

If you wish to defer your first year of study at Monash, you are strongly encouraged to speak to a faculty representative first to discuss your options.

An application for deferment must be submitted:

  • on or before the date specified for enrolment in your VTAC  offer letter, and
  • with the relevant faculty.

There are two ways you can submit an application for course deferment:

  • You can apply for course deferment online using the University's Web Enrolment System (WES):
  1. Log into WES
  2. From the WES main menu, click on 'Apply for Course Deferment'
  3. Click on 'View Deferment Policy and Eligibility' to ensure that you are making an informed choice to defer your studies
  4. Click on 'Apply to Defer from your Course'. Check the details on your screen to ensure that your admission details are correct
  5. Choose your 'Deferment Return Date' by clicking on the appropriate checkbox
  6. Read the declaration and if you agree and wish to proceed, click 'Submit Application'

A transaction record will appear on your screen.  Print this page as confirmation that your deferment application has been approved.  You will also receive an email to your Monash student email account if your submission is successful. Keep a copy of the email for future reference.

Some students may not have access to defer via the WES. Should you be unable to complete the application for course deferment online, a  deferment application form must be submitted:

Medicine and Radiography students: Contact the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences for Deferment Details - Medicine 61 3 9905 4301 and Radiography 61 3 9905 1212.

Normally the course structure and fee rate that is specified in the handbook of the year in which you take up your place will apply.

During deferment students must maintain current address details with the University so that they can receive enrolment documentation.

Domestic Students - Undergraduate

University policy allows a one-year deferment of study for all new undergraduate students who apply except where the student intends to study elsewhere in Australia. In these cases the faculty will determine whether the deferment is appropriate. Any approved study completed in Australia in the year of deferral cannot be used to gain credit unless specified in the conditions of the deferment.

Domestic Students - Postgraduate

Contact the relevant faculty. Students may be granted a deferment or may be advised to re-apply for the course in the following intake.

International Students - Undergraduate and Postgraduate

Apply to International Recruitment Services whilst still overseas.

Doctoral and Master of Philosophy Students

Any application for a deferment of the offer of candidature must be submitted in writing to the Monash Research Graduate School. Deferment, if approved, will be for a maximum of one year only.

Offers of candidature lapse six months after the date of the initial offer of candidature if the prospective candidate does not enrol and/or has not sought and been granted a deferment.

For further information, see the Doctoral and MPhil Information Handbook.

Enrolment after Deferment of an Offer

Enrolment arrangement details, for the next year, will be mailed to your current postal address between September and November. If you have not heard from the University by mid November you should contact your faculty office. You must notify the University of any address changes during your deferment in order to receive your enrolment information.
