Selection of current Year 12 applicants

Please note that meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee entry to a course as there may be fewer places available in a course than the number of applications received. Information regarding the basis for selection for individual courses is listed in the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre VTAC Guide and Monash Course Finder.

The Selection process takes into account:

The Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER)

• An ENTER is available for current school leavers with a VCE, interstate Year 12, NZ Bursary or IB qualification. The ENTER score is a percentile ranking showing an applicant's comparative placement in their VCE age group in that year and is based on the raw scores from their VCE studies.
• The ENTER is the primary tool used to select the majority of current school leavers, ie, students are selected on score alone.
• Unless otherwise stated in the VTAC Guide, for most courses a two stage selection process occurs. Selection on the basis of ENTER is the first stage and selection using middle band criteria (see below) is the second.
• Where the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority (VCAA) have used a Derived Exam Score to calculate the student's final study score, this will be taken as consideration of disadvantage. See VCAA Special Provision for more information.
• Some courses, eg art and design and medicine, may have alternative or additional selection mechanisms such as interviews, folios or an admission test. Check the VTAC Guide or the Monash Course Finder for individual course selection information.

Middle Band

In many courses, approximately 20% of offers for places are made using middle band criteria which give applicants bonus points towards their ENTER. Applicants in the 'middle band' range are looked at individually on the basis of published middle band selection information for example:

• performance in the applicant's prerequisite subjects or other specified studies (see VTAC Guide); and
• any special access schemes operated by the University which provide bonus points to individuals who have experienced disadvantage during their studies

Applicants meeting one or more of these criteria will be awarded bonus points and re-ranked to a higher level on the list of applicants.

Note: The middle banding process means that some applicants with lower ENTER scores will be selected ahead of students with marginally higher scores.

Other course requirements

Assessing VTAC Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) and Special Year 12 Consideration application forms

Monash University will take into account the information provided on the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Scheme (VTAC)  SEAS Access and Equity and Year 11/12 Special Consideration  application forms when ranking current Year 12 applicants for selection.

When assessing VTAC SEAS and Year 11/12 Special Consideration applications, selection officers will consider applicants' VCE study scores and whether the application provides evidence that the scores achieved are not a reliable guide to the applicant's potential for success in the course, due to circumstances experienced during Year 12. If this is the case, a moderate adjustment to ranking may result.

The University reserves the right to request applicants to supply additional information which may be relevant to their application, including documentation of previous academic records or medical certificates in the case of special consideration applications on grounds of illness.
